The art of photo retouching in the digital age offers an exciting range of possibilities. Old and ageing photos stuck in an album, hidden away in a cupboard can have new life instilled into them. Once the all important scan has been made the original can be returned undamaged as supplied, the rest is done using the advanced digital editing techniques from simple enhancements to complex re painting of damaged details.
The images on the right are good examples showing the original scan of the damaged 80 year old photo and the finished retouch which was reproduced as an enlargement but still in an authentic sepia tone.
The collage on the left is a creative way of putting those old family photos together. The originals were a mixture of good and bad quality prints at various sizes. This approach looks superb reprinted in the more modern canvas style.
There are many options and ideas. You may just wish to have your old prints scanned and preserved as digital masters. Then you can store them on a CD to pass on to future generations.
And don't think that the art of retouching is restricted to 'old' photos. New 'digital' images can be creatively arranged, merged, enhanced, retouched, improved and reproduced as stylish works of art on canvas or other fine art media.
